Fourberies quantiques

In the early 1980s, physicists managed to capture and photograph atoms for the first time. These black and white scientific images are still blurry, difficult to decipher. This project proposes to revisit them in its own way.

This series of invented, inspired, copied engravings attempts to understand the nature of science images, which makes them touching for some, informative for others. Unobservable by definition to the human eye, are these images created, revealed or invented? The artist Joséphine Topolanski explores here our relationship with truth. It oscillates between reality and fiction, playing on the ambiguities between documentary and imagination, visible and invisible, true and false…

This project was carried out by Joséphine Topolanski in the “Physics Reimagined” team (Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS) with the scientific help of Julien Bobroff.

It benefited from the support of the “Physics Reimagined” Chair of the Paris-Saclay Foundation and supported by the Air Liquide group and Crédit Agricole – CIB.

A big thank you to the engraving workshop at Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Coralie Nadaud and Camille Oarda.
